Disassembling the Robot

If you make a mistake or encounter a problem, don’t worry! Here we’ll show you how to take things apart so you can fix the problem.

Most assemblies can be broken down simply by removing screws or carefully unplugging connecting cables.

Taking apart the robot’s shell, however, can be quite challenging because of the tightly fitting snap-together tabs.

A step-by-step guide with instructions and videos follows below. Following these instructions will give you the best chance to get the shell apart without breaking it.

⚠ Precautions

Snap joints can take a fair amount of force to separate. Use care with the pry bar and watch out for sharp edges on the covers to avoid cutting or injuring yourself. Also be aware of surrounding objects on your workspace that may be knocked over if your hands move suddenly when the cover separates.

📔 Removing Shell Covers

Head

Head cover/ microphone array part

If the instructional video does not appear, please refresh/reload the page, or click the link below:

Step 1
Place the wide end of the pry bar between the head cover and head part at the location shown in video.

Step 2
Use a fair amount of force to work the pry bar into the gap until top snap pops apart. Slide tool into gap and work it around the edge of the cover to the bottom of the same side.

Step 3
Use the pry bar to work open bottom snaps as shown. Once top and bottom snaps on the right side release, cover can usually be removed by moving slightly to left and backwards. If necessary, use pry bar to open snaps on other side as well.

Cheek plates

If the instructional video does not appear, please refresh/reload the page, or click the link below:

Step 1
⚠Note! Remove【C02 Head cover/ microphone array part】before removing cheek plates!
Insert the pry bar into the top gap as shown, then pry open the upper latch.

Step 2
Slide the pry bar along the edge to pry open the remaining snaps.
⚠ Attention! The latches that connect the cheek plates are very tight and may require more force to open. Use care and keep other hand out of the way in case tool slips. Also avoid prying near ear touch sensors at front of robot.

Arms

*In this section, the robot’s right arm is used as an example.

Front and rear epaulet covers

Step 1
Insert the pry bar into the gap between the epaulet and the joint, then twist slightly to pop open and pull up.

Upper Arm Cover

If the instructional video does not appear, please refresh/reload the page, or click the link below:

Step 1
Rotate the arm so the inside of the elbow faces upward as shown. Put one thumb on each hand into the gap between elbow and covers and push down into gap while also pulling outwards. Gradually increase force until the snaps pop open.

Step 2
Rotate arm until exterior cover is upward, then work the exterior cover free of all snaps and remove.

Step 3
Rotate arm sideways or upside down to expose the interior arm cover, and carefully lift from front to back, then slide out and over the servo motor cable.
⚠ Be careful not to pull on the connecting cable when removing this piece.

—— Done!

Lower Arm Cover

If the instructional video does not appear, please refresh/reload the page, or click the link below:

Step 1
Insert wide side of the prybar into gap on top of the lower arm shell, and using a fair amount of force,  work it into gap and pry open the snap as shown.

Step 2
Use pry bar to pry open the snaps located on both sides of the lower arm shell, then pull backwards to remove from bottom clip and complete separation of lower arm shell.

Step 3
Remove the other half of the cover from the joint.
⚠ Be careful not to pull on connecting cable when removing.

—— It’s done!

Shoulders

*In this section, the robot’s right arm is used as an example.

Shoulder plates

Body

Bottom Plate

If the instructional video does not appear, please refresh/reload the page, or click the link below:

Step 1
Place robot face down.

Step 2
Insert pry bar into notch on right side of 【C07 Bottom Body Plate】as shown and pop pieces apart; then slide tool along between the two pieces popping open snaps one by one.

Anterior/Posterior Covers

If the instructional video does not appear, please refresh/reload the page, or click the link below:

Step 1
Place both hands along the joint where the front and rear covers meet as shown. Press two sides of cover inwards and work finger tips into gap until snaps detach. Be careful not to cut yourself. If enough force to open snaps cannot be exerted in this manner, try facing the robot sideways and pulling cover towards yourself along the gap.  Remove 【C04 Anterior Body Cover】.

Step 2
Squeeze light-emitting module on chest to release clips and remove. Unscrew three screws fastening posterior body cover as shown.

Step 3
Facing back of robot, locate two clips that hold cover to body frame. Grasp each edge of cover with one hand and pull shell towards you and out to sides until snaps on one side release. Rotate cover to other side to release and remove【C05 posterior body cover】.

—— Done!

Connection Cables

To remove Connection Cables, hold all wires together and **evenly** pull straight out to unplug Connection Cable. Note how gif shows wire rolled slighty over fingertip to exert upwards pressure where space permits.
